Revamping old games to be ready for future developments
The design process started with the analysis and the study of competitors. This led to the definition of systems that are still in use today, though always improving.
When I joined Digitalmoka, the core games were performing well, but they were hitting a wall. They were becoming difficult to expand due to a mix of legacy tech and design debt. I led a deep redesign, collaborating closely with the tech team to build a more modular architecture. The goal was to move away from a rigid structure and open up new ways to engage players across short, medium, and long-term cycles.
Setbacks
Every major redesign hits a few bumps, and we definitely had ours. In one specific area of the app, a segment of the user base pushed back hard. It turned out some design choices made early in the process didn’t sit right with the long-term players. Instead of forcing the change, we dug into the feedback, ran a series of tests, and iterated until we found a compromise. We managed to significantly minimize the friction and, more importantly, we learned exactly where the “red lines” were for our community.
